Responding to Book Challenges

 

What do Jay Gatsby and Captain Ahab have in common? Aside from being characters in classic works of American literature, they're also in books that have been challenged in recent years. During the 2023-2024 school year, there were over 4,000 instances of books being banned or challenged in response to new limits on books available to children.

Banned Books Week began in 1982 in response to similar efforts. This year, Banned Books Week runs from September 22-28. Resources for educators can be found here.

National Hispanic Heritage Month Resources

 

National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15) recognizes the historical and cultural contributions of Americans of Spanish, Mexican, Caribbean, and Central and South American descent. This collection of curated materials can help you plan your instruction. We also have resources on display in the CML.

• Learn about teaching databases like Teachingbooks
• Prepare for licensure exams like the Praxis
• Offer professional development workshops, on topics like Social Emotional Learning and Virtual Instruction 
• Practice using a touchscreen monitor 
• Create lesson plans
• Borrow an Education Supply Box from Course Reserves at the Circulation Desk (includes markers, colored pencils, crayons, tape, scissors, etc.)
• Laminate small projects
