Resources to Celebrate Native American Heritage Month

November is National Native American Heritage Month. During this time, we examine the history and culture of our nation's Indigenous Peoples. In addition to print titles, the CML has hundreds of relevant K-8 fiction and non-fiction e-books related to Native American history and culture.

Through our subscription to TeachingBooks, you can find teaching ideas and materials for hundreds of books by scanning the QR codes in the library or visiting the resources here. Please visit these sites for even more teaching resources for this month.

Responding to Book Challenges

What do Jay Gatsby and Captain Ahab have in common? Aside from being characters in classic works of American literature, they're also in books that have been challenged in recent years. During the 2023-2024 school year, there were over 4,000 instances of books being banned or challenged in response to new limits on books available to children.

Banned Books Week began in 1982 in response to similar efforts. This year, Banned Books Week runs from September 22-28. Resources for educators can be found here.
